Pierre Webo expects Paris walk-off to force stricter UEFA action against racism

Istanbul Basaksehir assistant coach Pierre Webo has said December 8, 2020, will be remembered in the fight against racism.

Webo was the victim of alleged racism by Romanian fourth official Sebastian Coltescu in the Champions League, which led to his team and hosts Paris Saint-Germain walking off. Coltescu referred to Webo – a former Cameroon international – as “the Black one” when pointing out to the referee that he should be sent off for protesting a decision.

Players and a new set of officials took a knee before the match resumed on Wednesday, with PSG winning 5-1, and Webo said more actions like this would force European football’s governing body UEFA to take stricter action in racism-related incidents.

Webo played for Cameroon 58 times, scoring 19 goals – including a hat-trick against Ivory Coast – over an 11-year senior team career. He has been with Basaksehir since 2019.

“This thing happened at a high level. This means that everything [in the levels] down, if they hear something, it can make players stop because on December 8 in the Champions League, some guys did that,” he said.

UEFA is conducting a “thorough investigation” which will not be completed before the Christmas holiday.
